Jailed for ₱100 – A SHORT STORY

Jailed for ₱100 – A SHORT STORY

Jon and his wife both worked at a small store.

Their income was barely enough to feed their five children.

Every peso mattered.

Then one day, their youngest child became seriously ill.

The fever kept getting higher.

Day after day, the child grew weaker.

Jon and his wife were terrified.

They needed medicine immediately.

But they had no money.

So they went to their boss and asked for a salary advance.

“Please,” Jon said.

“My child needs medicine.”

His wife stood beside him, hoping for mercy.

But the boss shook his head.

“No.”

The next day they asked again.

The answer was still no.

The day after that, the answer remained the same.

No.

That night, Jon sat beside his sleeping child.

The little boy’s body felt like fire.

His wife was crying quietly.

“We can’t let him suffer like this,” Jon whispered.

His wife wiped away her tears.

“But stealing is wrong.”

Jon looked at his son.

Then he looked at the empty wallet in his hand.

“I’ll return it on payday.”

His wife did not answer.

She only cried harder.

The next morning, Jon took ₱100 from the store.

Just enough to buy medicine.

Nothing more.

He truly planned to return every peso.

But fate had other plans.

A few days later, the missing money was discovered.

The boss became furious.

The police were called.

A case was filed.

Soon, Jon found himself standing in court.

Then came the day he feared the most.

The day he was taken away from his family.

As the police led him out, his wife was crying.

His children were screaming for him.

Jon tried to stay strong.

But when he heard his youngest child call out,

“Daddy, please don’t leave us…”

his heart completely broke.

Inside jail, life became even worse.

The cell was overcrowded.

Food was scarce.

And there was a man everyone feared.

The self-appointed leader of the cell.

Every week, he demanded money from the inmates.

Anyone who couldn’t pay was punished.

Jon had nothing.

Not a single peso.

Week after week, he was beaten.

Week after week, he suffered in silence.

Then one afternoon, while nursing another injury, an elderly inmate approached him.

The old man sat beside him.

For several minutes, he said nothing.

Then he finally spoke.

“Your name is Jon, right?”

Jon nodded.

The old man smiled.

Then he said something that would change Jon’s life forever.

“I’ve been watching you.”

Jon frowned.

The old man leaned closer.

“I think you’re the person I’ve been looking for.”

Jon’s heart started pounding.

He had no idea who this man was.

And he had no idea that this conversation would eventually turn him from a poor prisoner into a millionaire.

But the old man had a secret.

A secret he had been hiding from everyone inside that prison…
