Chapter 1

The room was too loud for a house that treated silence like good breeding.

A low, aching rock song spilled from the vintage black amplifier on the floor, all bruised guitar and a voice too tired to pretend it was fine. The sound pressed against the dark walnut doors, the heavy curtains, the still afternoon air.

Rosette Olsen slept through it.

She lay curled near the edge of the king-sized bed, one bare leg tangled in the gray sheets, her black silk slip loose on one shoulder. Her dark hair spilled across the pillow. Sunlight slipped through a narrow break in the curtains and touched the line of her back.

The bedroom looked exactly like her.

Beautiful. Expensive. Dramatic. Disordered.

Messy, but never careless.

Books had been pulled from the floor-to-ceiling shelves and left across the rug, yet even in that private ruin, they kept a strange discipline. Novels by genre. Authors grouped in ways only Rosette understood. A maid could move a gown worth ten thousand dollars without Rosette blinking, but put one paperback on the wrong shelf and she would notice before dinner.

The small clock on her bedside table read 2:00 PM.

The afternoon had already begun without her permission.

She had slept through calls, messages, staff knocking softly at her door, and whatever duties waited outside her bedroom. She had come home close to sunrise after champagne, cameras, loud music, and people who laughed too brightly because no one wanted to admit they were lonely.

Now the world wanted her awake again.

The bedroom door opened without a knock.

Elara Olsen entered with the quiet authority of someone who had earned the right.

She was elegant in a way that did not need decoration. Dark hair swept neatly back. Face calm. Posture graceful. She looked like a woman who had spent her life learning how to make pain appear polite.

She crossed the room and lowered the volume on the speaker.

The sudden hush made the bedroom feel larger.

For a moment, Elara only stood there, watching her daughter sleep.

The worry came slowly into her face.

“Rowee, darling,” she said. “You have to wake up now.”
